Industry Players

        The piña fiber and cloth industry is centered in Aklan since the Red Spanish variety used for fiber production is mainly found in the Panay Island.  In recent years, however, other provinces like Negros Oriental, Antique, Guimaras, Capiz, La Union and Palawan started its own cultivation of pineapple plant of the Red Spanish variety from Aklan coupled with the conduct of skills training program.  Palawan, aside from Aklan, is producing hand-scraped piña fiber and cloth using Red Spanish variety.

        On the other hand, there is only one existing cooperative which produces decorticated piña fiber, the operations of which is based in Camarines Norte.  Recently, the producer-cooperative also engaged in the production of handwoven fabrics from hand-scraped piña fiber of Formosa variety.

        Aside from farmers, highly-skilled workers and artisans such as scrapers, knotters and weavers are also involved in fiber and cloth production.
