In its bid to develop the local
silk industry, the FIDA implemented two important projects, namely:
- "Development of Sericulture
as a Rural Agro-Based Industry in the Philippines" funded
by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) with Phase
II being funded by the Korean International Development Program
(KOIKA); and,
- "National Integrated Sericulture
Development Program" (NISDP) funded under the RP-Japan Increased
Food Production Program.
Under these two projects, infrastructure support facilities for
cocoons and raw silk production have been established.
Rearing houses for the commercial
silkworm rearing in Benguet and La Union as well as in Southern
and Western Mindanao, Western Visayas and Central Luzon are now
operational. The breeding cum multiplication center at the UPLB,
which is being managed and operated by experts from the university
in collaboration with FIDA, provides the silkworm egg requirements
of Luzon farmers. Likewise, two silkworm egg multiplication centers,
one each in Davao and Iloilo, were established to cater silkworm
egg requirements of farmers in the Visayas and Mindanao. The construction
of MSCs in Region I and CAR which include a rearing house, a
processing building and a broiler house has been completed. The
centers are equipped with modern facilities from Korea. This
will be operated by farmers' cooperatives under the close supervision
of FIDA's technical staff.
