The Tissue Culture Laboratories are where in vitro cultivation of all plants whether embryos, organs, tissues, cells and protoplasts in an artificial culture medium containing mineral salts, sugar, nutrient, growth regulators, solidifying agent under aseptic or sterile condition are conducted. This method enables rapid mass propagation of economically important crops like abaca for the massive rehabilitation of disease-infected areas where large quantities of disease-free planting materials are needed. |

The FIDA Diagnostic Laboratories conduct virus detection in abaca explants for tissue culture, and disease indexing of abaca explants prior to mass propagation and diagnosis of other diseases affecting abaca plants. With the identification of the symptoms of infestation in the abaca farm, effective methods of prevention and control of diseases can be facilitated. Fiber loss will also be minimized, thus, improving fiber productivity and farmer's income. |
