INDUSTRY PERFORMANCE HIGHLIGHTS

SILK
  • Total production of dried cocoons reached 6,773.4 kgs., 25.2 percent higher from its 2000 level. Increased outputs were noted in Cagayan (from 21 to 190.1 kgs. or 805.2 percent higher), Romblon (from 68.2 to 200.8 kgs. or 194.4 percent higher), Negros Occidental (from 1,383.4 to 2,460 kgs. or 77.8 percent higher) and Bukidnon (from 741.1 to 2,153.8 kgs. or 190.6 percent higher).
  • By region, increased outputs were observed in Northern Mindanao (96.5%), Southern Tagalog (84.3%), Western Visayas (67.4%) and Southern Mindanao (5.4%).
  • Average prices of fresh and dried cocoons at the producers' level remained the same as in the previous year. Prices of raw silk, however, improved by 5 percent.
  • No exports of silk yarn was reported in 2001 while a total of 42,519 sq. m. of silk fabrics was shipped out which was 11.0 percent lower than the previous year. Substantial purchases by Japan (102.6% improvement) was recorded in 2001 but purchases by Singapore and the United Kingdom was down by 99.4 and 194 percent, respectively.

PIÑA/DECORTICATED PIÑA
  • Production of hand-scraped piña fiber increased to 3,334 kgs. or up by 31.9 percent.
  • Production of decorticated piña fiber, however, was down to only 700 kgs. from 1,000 kgs. in 2000 or a 30 percent decline.
  • Increased production of knotted fiber was also posted in 2001, up by 27.7 percent.
  • Production of plain piña cloth totaled 31,244 sq. m. or 4.3 percent lower than the previous year's level while piña-seda cloth production rose by 50.3 percent to 101,424 sq. m. in 2001.
  • Buying prices of loose piña fiber both dropped by 12 percent while for knotted fiber, only the liniuan fiber improved slightly by 3.3 percent while bastos fiber was down very slightly by 1.8 percent.
  • Prices of both plain piña and piña-seda cloths, likewise declined by 5.4 and 4.9 percent, respectively.
  • 100 kgs. of decorticated piña was exported to Japan in 2001 while only 114 sq.m. of piña cloth was exported in 2001 from the previous year's shipment of 13,390 sq. m. or a drop of 99 percent.

  • Production of coir dropped by 13.0 percent or from 1,157.8 m.t. in 2000 to 1,007 m.t. in 2001.
  • Laguna and Quezon increased production by 92.3 and 2.9 percent, respectively while production of Davao del Norte was down by 42.4 percent.
  • Domestic consumption, likewise, decreased by 31.4 percent or from 686.2 m.t. in 2000 to only 470.9 m.t. in 2001.
  • The Soriano Multi-Purpose plant in San Pablo City was gutted by fire in May of last year and this incident was a factor in the decrease in coir consumption.
  • Exports of coir was down by 11 percent or from 299 m.t. in 2000 to 266.1 m.t. in 2001. Correspondingly, export earnings was only $37,155, a decline of 35.7 percent compared to that of 2000.
  • Taiwan, a major buyer, decreased purchases by 18.2 percent.

COIR DUST
  • Export of coir dust fell by 25.9 percent as the major buyers like Canada, Japan and South Korea exhibited weakened demand. Australia, however, increased its imports substantially to 423.2 m.t., or 165.3 percent more compared to its purchases in 2000.
  • Export earnings generated was $265,100, up by 4 percent from 2000.
